Choose Engaging Photos

Finding the right, high-quality photo is tricky but incredibly important.

A photo is usually the first thing someone sees when viewing a page. By choosing a high-resolution, good-quality photo, we give a first impression that helps grab the attention of the reader and hopefully help them continue on to deeper content.

Below is an example of a good photo vs. a bad photo. Notice things like lighting, clarity, and the way people are framed in each photo.

Here are some other tips:

  • Do not take just any photo off the internet. Please ensure that you’ve secured proper licensing for each image that you use. Images you've found through Google are NOT fair game.
  • Use free stock images. You can use sources like Unsplash, AllTheFreeStock, Magdeleine, Snapwire Snaps and Jay Mantri.
  • Hire a photographer. While we recommend searching for royalty-free stock photography, you can also take photos yourselves or hire a photographer.
  • Purchase good-quality photos when necessary. If purchasing photos, we’d suggest checking out Lightstock and Thinkstock (please make sure you purchase appropriate credits).
  • High-Resolution. Please ensure that all photos uploaded to the site are high resolution (minimum 800px x 600px).
